Fear & Greed · a supporting clue

What the Fear and Greed Index says about a Bitcoin bottom

The Crypto Fear and Greed Index is a simple mood meter, scored from 0 to 100. Deep fear often shows up around a bottom. But it follows the mood, it does not predict it. Mostly it tells you how the market already feels.

What it measures

The index rolls several things into one number from 0 to 100: how sharply prices are swinging, how much is being traded, the mood on social media, surveys, and a few related measures. A low number means people are fearful. A high number means they are greedy. It is a snapshot of feeling, not of value.

ScoreMood
0 to 24Extreme fear
25 to 49Fear
50Neutral
51 to 74Greed
75 to 100Extreme greed

The index calls anything from 0 to 24 “extreme fear.” The gauge sets a stricter bar: it only treats a reading of 15 or below as a real sign of panic, and even then it counts for very little.

Why it is only a supporting clue

Deep fear often shows up at a bottom, because bottoms feel awful. But feeling awful and actually being at the bottom are not the same thing. The index can stay fearful for a long time with no bottom in sight. So on this site it can deepen the read, but it can never flip the headline by itself. We do not call a bottom on mood alone.

Frequently asked

Does extreme fear mean it is time to buy Bitcoin?
Not on its own. Deep fear often shows up at bottoms, but it also shows up plenty of times without one. The gauge treats it as a supporting clue, never a trigger. This is not financial advice.
What score counts as extreme fear?
The index labels 0 to 24 as extreme fear. This gauge uses a stricter line and only treats a reading of 15 or below as a real sign of panic.
Why does the gauge give Fear and Greed so little weight?
Because it follows the mood rather than predicting the price, and it swings easily on news. It mostly reflects how people already feel, so it supports the read without driving it.
